Embroidery and DTF (direct to fabric) are the two most common techniques used today in decorated apparel and gear.
Machine Embroidery uses rayon or polyester threads to apply a design to the garment or gear. These threads are available in a wide variety of colors to achieve the design.
Embroidery permits a high degree of personalization and is generally considered a high quality valued impression.
DTF (direct to fabric) is a modern version of Screen Printing. This technique applies color designs directly to the fabric via heat transfer. The transfer process is stable and the colors adhere to the fabric ensuing the fabric remains soft, breathable and stretchable.
Some garment types are more friendly to one of these methods or the other. Other decision factors play a role as well. Key factors in which technique to use are:
Garment type: This is the primary driver regarding which technique is best suited. Not all garments can be embroidered with great results and likewise for DTF.
Logo or graphic: Consideration of what graphics will be applied to the item is next up. Depending on amount of detail in the graphic and number of colors or blends needed will drive the technique to be used.
Wear: The amount of wear and tear the item must ensure, is dry cleaning required and other factors will impact the technique decision.
Budget: As with most things, the available budget is a factor also. Typically DTF is more budget friendly (but not always).
